Hi everyone, this is my first post on usenets so forgive me if i am
poor at this..
I recently got a new computer (almost regret doing that with the
hassle it has taken me). I have succesfully transfered the contacts
via the 'transfer my files and settings' wizard.

When i start tryping a name in the address field of a new email, it
wont prompt me with addresses that i KNOW i have in my contacts. so i
have to manually click on the 'to' address icon and go that route,
which is several clicks and messing about.

I have searched for several hours on microsofts site and followed some
of the help items that they suggested. For example, I right clicked
on properties of 'contacts' 'properties' and on the 'outlook address
book' i checked the box to make 'show this folder as an email address
book'.

But when i click on address book in the standard tool bar in outlook,
it says there are no items in the address book.

I cant believe that its so badly designed. there does not seem to be
any way to synch the address book and contacts. does anyone know of a
way to import or synch my entire contacts (500 entries, dont really
want to put them all in manually) with the address book? can i get
outlook to just use the contacts? who needs the address book
anyway?

I would be so helpful for anyone who can help.
its outlook 2003 and windows XP pro, btw.
thanks

That wizard does a remarkably poor job of working with Outlook data. See
this for the proper way to transfer your Outlook data:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/movepst.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

And since you're on a new PC, you may have to create a new mail profile to
connect the old data:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm .

SInce the autocompletion feature doesn't use your Contacts at all, it's not
a surprise. Autocompletion remembers those addresses to which you have sent
mail. Since this is a "shiny new computer", you haven't sent any yet, so
there's nothing to remember. Had you copied your NK2 file and connected it
correctly, you would have had all the addresses you had used from the old
PC. See this for a complete explanation:
http://www.ingressor.com/autocompletetips.htm . It may not be too late to
copy the file, if you still have the old PC.

Does the "Show names from the" drop-down allow any choices? If not, you
will need to start with a new mail profile in order to repair the Outlook
Address Book service.

That's because the "address book" and Contacts don't need to me "synched".
The address book doesn't contain any data. It is merely a view of those
contacts in your Contacts folder that have electronic addresses (i.e., email
addresses or fax numbers).

Exporting and importing are never the way to transfer data from one Outlook
to another. Without the address book service, Outlook will not be able to
resolve what you type in the To field into an email address.

You have enough information, if you read the web pages I cited, to get your
Outlook working. Read them and try their methods and if you still have
trouble, post again.

Hi (e-mail address removed). I had a similar issue a couple of weeks ago. Check
these settings and see if it helps.

- tools – email accounts – under Directory, choose View or change…address
books - next
- make sure Outlook Address Book is listed. If not, click Add and add it
- then make sure the box is still checked under Outlook Address Book in
Contacts Properties

After about a half hour of frustration, I finally got mine to work. Good
Luck!
