i cant shutdown my comp. help!!!

hi i used to have two buttons on the bottom when i clicked the windows
button. 1 was shutdown , the other was log off. untill recently the shutdown
button has disapeared. The only way i am able to shut down now is to first
log off and from there i ca shut down.
Can someone help me get that icon back.
