I am having the exact same issue. The error I am getting is
" The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider."

I have set the account up as a POP3 on my DSL, I have my complete user info
in there and have rechecked it a dozen times. I have put it in just as I had

According to your ISP's help page:
Incoming E-mail server: pop.tds.net
Outgoing E-mail server: smtp.tds.net
Your full email address goes in the Account Name field.
Do you have "My server requires authentication" checked?
If so, uncheck it, and try again.

Hi, I would like to know what just happened to my mail account!! I had it all
set up, had tranfered from my old computer 300 e-mails, had put them in the
folders I assigned for them, and now when I went back to check on something -
THE FOLDERS ARE EMPTY, all of them!!!! you can see the number next to the
folder name of the unread messages, but they are not there. where are they? I
also had a 'junk mail' folder wich contained 41 messages, but the folder was
locked, couldn't get in to see what the messages were; now that folder has
disappeared as well; what is going on??Please help,Eleonore

Isn't this great. All here have the same problem and no solutions. I sure
hope this isn't an indication of things to come???

Woops,,, we now have one solution............one of the many windows that
opened during this mess indicated that one e-mail was the problem. I do not
remember the wording. I removed that e-mail (a rather lengthy one containing
a movie) and the rest went as usual.....wa.la!!! Hope this helps some!

Yes, I have tried it both ways, checked and unchecked and get the same
message either way.

OMG, you were so right! The email had pics in it. I deleted that, I then
sent a test email and it worked, imagine that!!! I then resent the email
with pics and it worked! Now come on, why is windows mail working like this?

Without changing anything, I got it to work. I followed what a fellow poster
stated about movies, I deleted the email. I sent another plain test email and
it worked! I then retried the email is pics and it worked. It should not
work this way, should it?

No, it shouldn't be temperamental like that.
It's possible that your antivirus program is sometimes interfering
with outgoing emails.
