I am trying to reformat my computer, but I can't delete the existing partion
for the current XP. It says it needs some "necessary files". Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Why are you trying to reformat? How are you trying to reformat? That
message may mean there is a hidden partition that has files on it so as to
be able to re-install XP. What kind of XP CD have you got?

I have a virus and to much spyware, it has just been running really slow.
I have the operating XP disc that came with the computer. I try to reformat
by putting the cd in then rebooting the system.

Hi

Follow the link that Jupiter posted for a 'Clean' install of XP. Please see
the bottom of the page if you have an OEM CD.

You cannot do it under the feet of the system running on it. If you
feel you must do it (and I regard it as a last resort, *not* routine
maintenance), You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after
booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement
take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select
and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted
at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
