I can't record sound on my computer

I remember dowloading "Windows XP Service Pack 1" last night from microsoft.com and the download froze. So then I did not think that I needed it. Today, when I tried to record something, the Sound Recorder program will not record. I checked my speakers and microphone and they are working. Is there a way for me to fix this

Try to recover to a restore point from yesterday. Before SP1 gets
installed, it creates a restore point.

Also try to reboot, it may fix the problem.
