I can't put shortcuts onto the taskbar

You cannot put shortcuts on the Taskbar, but you can put a Toolbar on
the Taskbar and add shortcuts to the toolbar. Check whether a Toolbar
is active.

No you didn't. You dragged them to a toolbar. Probably the Quick Launch (try typing it in Help) toolbar.

What is THAT called?
If it aln't the TASKBAR what is it?
The QUICK LAUNCH?

With QL on but all other toolbars off.

Start button, Quick Launch toolbar, Taskbar, System Notification Area (aka System Tray)

The whole thing together is called a taskbar as well.

I have just found the vertical dotted bar that I was going the wrong side
of.
WITH A BIG MAGNIFYING GLASS...

I found a pair on the road several years ago so can read if I have to. I can't read what I type in text boxes without them (or books which is why I read about 99.99999% non fiction these days compared to 99.9% fiction when I could see, because one can download non fiction books from the internet for free (over the last week I read every back issue of Armour magazine). The only topic I don't read anything on is computers. Because nothing interesting has been written for decades.
 
The probiem was that I physically couldn't see the dotted line between the
Quick Launch Tray and the Taskbar, I didn't even know it existed!
I need a 3x magnifying glass to find it :-(( <pillocks!>

Can I change the background colour of the QLT or something?

FWIW I can barely see my keyboard now.
I'd give ANYTHING to be able to just pick up a book and snuggle up in a
chair and simply READ.
