I can't open hyperlinks received in an email

Until a week ago, when I clicked on an underlined hyperlink received in an
email message, it would take me to the website. Suddenly, it will not work.
What do I need to change in Outlook to make it work again?

Also, my HTML received emails are all being changed to text, when before,
they would display as HTML's. I have the HTML format choosen under Options
to display pictures rather than the links, but it is not working. I have to
tell each message to display as HTML and when I leave the message, it goes
back to text.

HELP PLEASE!!!!

Andy

Outlook 2003 will automatically change hyperlinks to plain text if the mail
goes into the junk mail folder. Move the mail to another folder to enable
links again.

(Note to self - quit being amazed that people actually click links from
email rather than visiting the site directly - spammers rule, users drool!)

Following may be of interest:

Loss of file association. Do following: Windows
explorer>Tools>Folder options>File types>Scroll and select "HTML" extension.
In box titled "Details for HTML extension " should state that opens with IE.
If does so then click on "Advanced" and verify that default action is open"
(will be bold typeface). Otherwise click "Change" and select IE."

I understand this is an old issue I'm responding to here, but this just
happened to me when I updated to IE7, which I was loath to do. (It became
obvious that MS was screwing with IE6 hold outs in order to "encourage" them
to update).

Anyway, I felt compelled to leave my .02 cents here :)

To my point . . . there are still many of us who don't click on links from
people that they don't know. We don't need Microsoft to protect us from
ourselves. For example, changing the way hyperlinks respond in our emails
without our knowledge or creating issues with IE6 when we don't respond in
the affirmative when asked if we wish to update to IE7.

Anyway, all is well with me and IE7 and thanks for explaining how to deal
with the sudden and unexplained inactive "active" hyperlinks in my emails.
(Frustrating!)

Thanks for everyone's help!

Your hyperlink problem is exactly like mine. Did you find an answer. If so, I
would surely appreciate you telling me what you found. Thanks. - Tony

Peter - I think you're on the road to helping me, but I don't have a clue was
IE8 is or how to install it. I follow instructions really well. Can you so
instruct? If that solves my problems, great, but might you have any idea what
might have happened for me not to open the files when I could before. Don't
waste a lot of time thinking about that; if installing IE8 is what I need to
do, please let me know what I need to do to do it. Thanks a milllion. - Tony

What I am saying is that if you have IE8 installed then this is a known issue and a
fix is still not available.
If it is Yes (IE8 installed) then you need to copy the link and put it into you
browser (IE8) to open it

If IE8 is NOT installed then you need to make sure that your IE is set as the
default browser under IE\Properties\Programs and put a checkmark at the bottom where
it states Internet Explorer etc etc etc.

Thanks for your help, Peter, but I'm still not there. I don't know if IE was
the 8 version or not. I did go in and click it as my default browser. It has
always been my default browser, but it somehow got unclicked. Once I clicked
it and saved it, I thought I was home safe. Not so.

The same Outlook alert came on - "This operation has been cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your systems
administrator."

Rats! I then downloaded Frefox and made it as my default browser, thinking
that might help the problem. (Right!) When I got back to my NY Times email
and tried to open one of the writer's files, I got the same alert as before.

I'm going to do what one should always do in a case like this or any case
dealing with computers - reboot and see what happens. If it works and I can
read my hyperlinked files be clicking on them - great day. If not, any more
suggestions.

Thanks again for taking up so much of your time.

Tony
By the way if you think it would help, you can send me an email at
(e-mail address removed) and I'll send you my phone number or you can send me
yours and we might be able to talk like two real people. Just an idea.

Peter - Problem fixed. I'm not sure exactly how. The first thing I did was
change my primary browser to Firefox. The second thing I did was to reboot -
the one thing that should be done 100% of the time in my experience. I went
back to my NY Times and clicked on the hyperlinked at it opened up ousing
Firefox.

Thanks for your help and making me doing a little thinking myself. - Tony

What happens when you try? Did you try resetting Internet Explorer settings?
go to IE's Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. (Or Control panel,
Internet options, Advanced tab).

All this is very fine, but as the links worked in all situations until a
couple of months ago, what has happened that they don't work now. Most likely
an update supplied in the automatic update system has changed things.

When I sought help from Microsoft, they told be to remove all none Microsoft
add ons from IE8. Now I have the most useless of search engines called Bing,
and a browser that does not work very well at all.

So I found a simple solution. Use another browser. Links seem to work fine
in all the browsers I have on my system, bar IE8.

Just set your default browser to another browser of your choice choice, in
Internet Options. Fixed.

If you use IE8, the problem will return to haunt you over and over.
