I've just bought an IBM T23 Thinkpad with Microsoft Windows 2000 Prfessional installed (no accompanying disc or handbood as it is a re-conditioned machine). I've used it 5 or 6 times and now it won't load past 'Log on to Windows' I just get the Logon Message 'The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case. Make sure that Caps Lock is not accidentally on.' The only thing it will let me do is shutdown. As you can probably guess I'm no techi. I contacted the company I bought it from and they said 'It's a virus, nothing to do with them. They don't deal with software.' Can anyone suggest anything?

Did you always have to Logon before it locked out?

Or did that just start by its self?

Cheers

Ican't Logon

The Logon was always there but it just said NewIBMUser and did not need a password. I just clicked on OK and it loaded.

Sounds like the machine has been joined to a domain, when you've logged on before where you connected to the network?

Do you get a more options box where you can change what you log on to? that may have been changed by mistake. If it has change it from the domain to the computer name.

If worst come to the worse there are ways of resetting administrator passwords with boot utilities.

Yeah, there should be a drop down menu, take a look if there are other domains to select

I doubt it’s a virus, those people you spoke to are talking through there a£$£Ses

The only thing I have logged onto previously with it is the Internet It is not attached to anything else, not even my desktop computer.

There is an 'options' box but the only choice is Log on using dial-up connection. When I try this it dials and then hangs until I switch the whole thing off.

There are no drop downs on the screen at all.

" I contacted the company I bought it from and they said 'It's a virus, nothing to do with them"

By the way that attitude annoys me, why i was blunt about the virus thing!
I say they should help you if you purchased the lap top off them!

Still researching, skinz might be able to help?

Well it's not connected to a domain then, you should then be able to logon with your username and password. Was that administrator by the way? Did you change the password since you've had the laptop?

If worse comes to worse like I said earlier there are ways of changing the administrator password but they are not straight forward.

I did change it to my own Logon and password. I tried several times with that. Then I tried every possible variation of it I could think of in case I had got it wrong.

I had never used the Administrator. I have just tried it. Deleted the account and set up a new one and it has let me in.

I guess I chalk this one up to Human Error. Thank you so much for your help.

Cool :)

I was about to tell you to try the administrator account with a blank password, but no need to now
