i cant import AVI or MPEG files

i tried importing some video into movie maker and it came up with the error:
The file D:\Tom's Documents\My Videos\Intros\movie_intro.avi cannot be
imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your
computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close
and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

i figured that i need a codec but i just want to know where to get it from.
P.S: The file works in windows media player

The following program will identify the
codec that was used to make the .avi
file. That will be the codec you need.
