Hi all,

I just bought a ibm r40 notebook, it was installed with a windows xp.

But when i opened the hardware manager, I couldn't find the com1 port, but
can only find the lpt1.

Can anybody explain what is the reason of it? How can I make com1 port
appear in the "hardware manager" program?

Thank you!

Are you sure that it has a Com1 port? Is there a nine-pin D connector on the
laptop? It seems that most new laptops do not have serial (COM) ports at all.
Most have USB ports - you could get a USB to serial converter if you need a
serial port.

Yes, true, thank you.

There is only a port which seems to be able to connect to a monitor.I
thought it was the com1 port.

So, I heard there is a converter which can convert usb port to com1 port, if
I use the converter, can I debug the equipments that are connected to com1
port as well as it was a real com1 port?

Thank you.

It depends on the hardware and whether it will function on a USB port. Those
converters are generally made for connecting PDAs and such. You might not
know unless you try it.
