I can't delete emails.

A little while ago my computer crashed and I lost 300
emails out of my inbox (stupid I know). Ever since then
Outlook Express works fine after boot up but as soon as I
log onto the internet I cannot use the delete button in
the tool bar. In fact the only way to delete is to "shift -
delete - yes" on the keyboard. I switched to another
identity and it worked fine. Any ideas on how to either
restore those emails and delete them (if that's the
problem) or restore the delete function of the button
without booting up all the time.
