I can't burn CD's from Windows Explorer

A microsoft representative told me that I could burn
documents and audio files onto a CD by dragging and
dropping into the D: drive in Windows explorer. I have
tried this a few times and am wasting CD's because each
time the Wizard says that it cannot write the information
to the CD.

I am using Windows XP operating system on a Dell Inspirion
4000, which originally had Windows ME.

Right click the CD-ROM drive in Explorer, select Properties, go to the
Recording tab, place a check next to "Enable CD recording on this drive,"
click apply and ok and try again. NOTE: this does not write the files
directly to CD, it places files in a holding area until you are ready to
burn a CD.

This function is different from trying to use a CD as you would a floppy
disk, this is known as packet writing and XP does not support that function
natively. This requires third party software such as the Direct CD
component of Easy CD
Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

Check the web sites for version compatibility with XP as well as compatible
CD-Writers.

What is the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service in XP for Michael? I don't have anything but XP installed. Absolutely no third party software what so ever and burn CD's whenever I require. XP supports CD burning without the need for any third party software. At least my copy of XP HE does. Good luck
 
I've just done some additional searching on this topic as Michael always states you need third party software to write to a cD. Even Microsoft disputes this. You don't. The only acception being ISO. If you want to use an Internation Standards Organization image then you will need third party software. Mr. Solomon would you please stop giving this false information. Please re-read my post. My reference to needing third party software was
specific to dragging and dropping files directly to CD or saving files
directly to CD. This cannot be done in XP without third party software.

XP's rather limited CD burning function is similar to CD mastering as is
done for audio CDs where an entire CD is created at once.

If you'll note, in the first paragraph, I explained how to turn on the CD
burning function in XP and I did not specify that this function required
third party software.
 
I don't see anything in the article that is conflict with anything I have
said. Either you have misread the article or you've misunderstood my posts.
 
You don't drag and drop directly to CD as you would a floppy disk and as
such you cannot use NTbackup to backup directly to CD without third party
software either.

Yes, you can burn a CD with XP, I've never said you can't. I've only
advised people who appear or seem to appear to be trying to save directly to
CD from an application or drag and drop directly to CD in Explorer...You
don't do that, XP can't do that on it's own without third party software.
When you drag and drop in Explorer, the files first go to a separate
location from which all files you then wish to burn to CD can be burned.
Packet writing saves the user from that step and many people who have used
packet writing either wittingly or unwittingly don't realize that function
is not supported in XP.

thing. He is explaing about the difference between the native CD burning
functions and third party CD packet writting software [which you seem to
have no understanding of].

That is correct. I've never said XP cannot burn a CD. I have said some
options of which some users wish to avail themselves require third party
software because those particular options or methods are not supported by XP
or achievable with its built-in burning function, at least not in the form
users seeking those options have become accustomed.
