I have installed Vista and set up Windows Mail with my email accounts and now
I cannot send mails. I am using my internet provider's settings and they used
to work in XP. I have tried to delete and set up the account again but
sending mails still won't work. Also the virus control is disabled for
outgoing mails. Receiving mails works as it should.

The following error occurs:

The rejected e-mail address was '.......@........'. Subject 'test', Account:
'mbox-4.inet.fi', Server: 'smtp.inet.fi', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response:
'554 <..........@........>: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Anybody knows what 'Relay access denied' means?

Are you connected via their network?

Have you checked authentication settings on the Servers tab?

If you have SSL enabled and your mail server does not use it, that could be
a source of the problem. I have also seen Avast cause a problem such as you
have. Try turning off your AV ( whichever one you have) and then send mail.
Avast has had a few interesting problems with Vista. I switched to CA AV
when I was having the same problem you are experiencing and my mail is
flowing out again.

No, I do not have SSL enabled.

I am using F-secure for virus control, and Vista is indeed giving me a
message saying that there could be compatibility problems with this program.
I tried to close it completely though, and still no e-mail could be sent.

Could there be any chance that my internet provider's server has problems
receiving e-mails from Vista?

Possible but very unlikely. I am agreeing that it looks like a setting in WM
or an AV compatibility problem.

I have had exactly the same "error 554" problem since installing Vista (over
the past couple of days). I just came on to this forum and when I returned
to my mail the offending email had miraculously been sent. I've no idea why
- I haven't changed any settings. I wish all discussion forums were as
effective!
