My installation of Office XP got screwed up, so I uninstalled and
reinstalled. Now outlook will not recognise my backup files as they are
incompatible with this version.

What version of Outlook were you using when you created your backup?
How did you create your backup?
Please include the exact steps you are using to open your "backup" and the
exact text of the error message you see.

I was using Outlook 2003, using the downloadable "Outlook 2003 Add-in:
Personal Folders Backup".

I have several PST files, and none will open. However, my IMAP account
opens, and I cen receive and read mails from there. But everything that was
backed up from my POP account is in the backup.pst. Interestingly, there is
no windows logo now, next to a PST file in Explorer, whereas there used to be.

I have tried two routes to open the backup. First, I tried File, Open,
Outlook data file, then clicked on the file name. The error message tells me
that "the file *.pst is not compatible with this version of the Personal
Folders information service. Contact your administrator." Trouble is, I am
the administrator!

The second route I tried was Import, but had the same problem.

I also find I cannot send e-mails now from this computer, even though the
Test Settings button works successfully and transmits a test message that I
receive.

Really stuck!!

Best

Any PSTs created with the default OL2003 format is incompatible with all
previous versions. The only way to get at that information would be to
install the trial version, export the PST to a fresh "OL97-2002" format PST
then use that with OL2002 or earlier.
