I cannot open a ppt file error message states no text converter

I cannot open an earlier version of a powerpoint presentation. the error
message states, "Powerpoint can't open the outline of C:\the files name.ppt.
No text converter is installed for this file type.

I'm guessing that there is some text 'pasted' into the powerpoint file is
from either another application (not powerpoint), or from a new version of
powerpoint, or in another language
