I cannot make my wireless adapter stop using an 169.x.x.x address

I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 2000 Professional, with a Linksys
"g" wireless card and a Linksys Access Point on the LAN.

The Access Point works fine with an IBM X40 running XP. But I am getting
some strange behavior on the Dell.

I have no problem getting a link between the AP and the wireless card. The
problem is that a few seconds after starting up the Dell, the LAN address
it must have received from my DHCP server goes away, and is replaced by
169.x.x.x . So you get to e.g. browse the internet for a few seconds, and
then it all falls apart when the correct network info disappears. I've watched
this happen by monitoring the Linksys config tool - if you open it when you
first login after a reboot, you can see the correct LAN address. Then after a
few seconds, that disappears, to be replaced with the 169.x.x.x stuff.

If someone can shed some light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The 169.******** is because the card is not getting an address from
anywhere. It is the default that shows when there is no net response
when trying to get an IP address.
Try specifying the IP address and see if that fixes it. Does the AP
work with other machines? Does the wireless card work okay with other
networks? Can you turn on DHCP in the AP or is not a setting?
You do have a router in the mix, right? If you plug the AP directly
into the cable box that could be the problem.
