Haven't a clue why it'd do that but is it fair to assume that you're clicking a
link to a PPT file? Instead, right click and choose Save Target As, save the
PPT file to a convenient place on your computer (the Windows desktop, for
example) then double click it to run from there.

Steve , thanks for your response, I tried to save it and look at the file in
my documentes and I still get the windows installer icon, I can see the
first page of the ower point. but the the insall drop down is in the middle
of the page and will not go away

Pure high-grade weirdness!

What does the windows installer seem to be trying to install?

And try something else if you would: start PPT, create a new presentation,
save it to My Documents or wherever. Now quit PPT and try opening it the same
way as you did the other file.

Same result?

I created a new power point and saved it and can access it just fine.
My computer tries to install microsoft windows standard edition 2000. It
ask me for my name , initals and my 25 letter product key and when I put the
product key in it states it is a invalid # byt I typed it off of the
original product key. I have microsoft office XP for students and teachers
versoin 2002. Do I need to upgrade to a higher version? Thanks Hal

I don't think an upgrade's needed, especially since this silly beast seems to
want an older version than the one you have.

I have to wonder if there's something amiss with this PPT file, though.

You might ask the original sender to zip it and send it again in a zip file.
