I have a Dell 1100 Inspiron XP notebook and cannot send
an e mail. this computer is 2 days old and I have been on
the phone with both aol and dell for the 3rd day. Aol
said Microsoft is the problem, when I called microsoft
they said it would cost $35 for their help. This is the
problem: When I try to send email an error screen comes
up saying the host smtp could not be found and gives an
error #. I have one telelphone line. If no one can help I
am sending this monster back to Dell.

Sure sounds like you don't have the smtp server correctly set up in your
email program. Of course, if you're trying to use aol mail through a
program like outlook express, it won't work.

You probably haven't set your email account up correctly. You should post in the Outlook Express newsgroup, where the experts hang out

Greetings --

I'm afraid you'll need to contact AOL's tech support for resolution
of problems with (or caused by) their product; Microsoft has no
control over AOL's product quality (or lack thereof). Neither does
Dell.

I'd suggest you drop AOL and contract with a real ISP.

Greetings --

That couldn't be it, in this case. AOL requires its "subscribers"
to use AOL's own proprietary email software. No other email client is
compatible with AOL.

You can't use Outlook for AOL mail unless you install a third-party program
like e-netbot.

HI "Monsterowner"
Don't panic. Check with your ISP first.Let them take you through th
steps in setting up your Email program properly. However you should
make sure that all your entries are set correctly according to wha
your ISP has given you for logging on.Also make sure that your use
name and pass word are correct.Could also be that the email server i
temp out of order at their end.
Hope this helps.

You cannot use Outlook or Outlook Express with AOL. Use AOL's
software. Its NOT microsoft's problem as AOL is NOTHING to do with
Microsoft. AOL does NOT use standard POP3/SMTP protocols, they use
their own proprietary software.
