I can receive emails, but I can't send them.

I have been on the phone with my ISP, the manufacturer of my laptop, and the
Microsoft Support people. My ISP, RCN, said that all my info is correct. HP
said they can't help me with my Pavillion. And Microsoft said that they're
hearing the same problem with Windows Mail on Windows Vista. What am I going
to do now? If anybody has any suggestions, they would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the same problem. I can download from ANY server, but absolutely
NOTHING can be sent from Vista mail at all. I am beginning to wonder WHY
anyone would ever write code for a program that has NO permissions
whatsoever. I've been working on this for WEEKS and still nothing. Not even
GMAIL will work with this junk, and I'm about to scrap the whole idea of it
EVER working.

You start by describing your problem in detail, complete with a copy of
any error message.

Gmail works fine which suggests the fault lies with the user... ie. you.

Using Norton or McAfee Antivirus by any chance?

Sounds like you haven't asked the right people for help. :-)
I don't recall seeing posts from you asking for advice.
If you want help, describe a problem in detail (one issue at a time),
complete with a copy of any error message.

I'm using McCaffee Version 8.5i. Could that effect email? I don't know
myself.
Thanks for your help. Nickabhock.

Indeed it can. In fact McAfee and Norton AV's are notorious,
on this forum at least, for screwing up Windows Mail.

Many peoples WM problems have evaporated like morning mist
when replacing those Vista incompatible products with eg.
Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html or
AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0

note. You may wonder why PC manufacturers (eg Dell) supply software
that is incompatible with Vista and the answer is money.
Dell are paid by software vendors to include their products
on PC's supplied by Dell. The software suppliers exploit users
inertia knowing well that most users won't change something
if they can possibly avoid it and thus giving free trial versions
often turn into paid subscriptions in due course.

I knew I would forget something...the same error message appears whenever I
press either "Send Receive All," or just "Send All" :

Subject 'test', Account: 'pop.rcn.com', Server: 'smtp.rcn.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC15
Thank you for your help. Nickabhock.

Are you at home when you get that send failure?
If so, are you running McAfee or Norton antivirus? They would need
to be uninstalled because they are not compatible with Windows Mail.

Wow! As soon as I disabled McAfee, I could send emails again. You're a
lifesaver. Thanks so much.

Cool, but the experiences of this group
indicates it it better uninstalled completely
and replaced by one of the options below.

Should you encounter further problems bear that in mind.

Thank you GaryV!
Yes, Asking the right people IS important of course. Yes I am running a
30day "new purchase of laptop" subscription of Norton Internet Security.
Tomorrow I will copy the exact wording of my error mssg. I REALLY appreciate
the help from everyone!
This actually is the 1st mention of the anti-virus prgrams I've herad, even
from different tech support people. I signed up fpr GMail only this AM,
because I'd heard that it WORKS with Vista-Mail:-) Will get back later, and
THANK YOU GUYS!!

SOCKET_CONNECT_ERROR Unable to open Windows Socket.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
should be uninstalled.
