Hi Yesterday my computer was OK. Today when I try to use "system restore", the computer tells me "system restore application has encountered a prblem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and I can not do it anymore
Is there any way to fix this problem? Or I can do a minimum "repair reinstall to keep all my applications". Or I must do totally re-install XP to fix the problem. Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Most likely not necessary.

simply turn off restore,
Right click on my computer left click on properteis
click on system restor tab and
turn it off.
reboot and turn restore back on

Hopefully that will fix the problem.

I assume you have antivirus and adaware software loaded and
operational.

Hi,

Once System Restore goes bad, the only thing you can do is stop it and
restart it. Start/run services.msc, locate the SR service and doubleclick
it. Click the stop button, then set the startup type dropdown to disabled.
Click apply/ok, then reboot.

Then, check the "System Volume Information folder" on each drive and delete
any contents. Reverse the steps to restart it.

Be forewarned that doing this removes all existing restore points, but it
doesn't really matter as they weren't working anyways.

If this does not help, follow these steps to reinstall System Restore:

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it to "Show hidden
files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files
[recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the sr.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

Hi Thanks for the advice. I tried, it just doesn't work. I can not even open the system restore tab.Every time I try to open the tab, the computer tells me"Rn DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience". "Please tell Microsoft about this problem.Three choices are:Debug,Send Error Report,Dont send". I do have Norton antivirus software in my computer, but I already disabled it and deleted adaware software(flash get). Does this software cause system restore function corrupt? Thank you for your time

Hi I followed the instruction you wrote except the " System Volume Information folder on each drive and delete any contents" because I coundn't find it and don't know where it is. But I do followed the instructions(run, stop, reboot, run start SR again) and the function resume to work again. Thanks a lot because I don't have to re-install my XP and many many applications(That's really a disaster). If possible, would you please tell me how to get to "System Volume Information folder" because I worry this problem will happen again because I really did nothing wrong to cause this problem.

Thanks.

Hi,

Glad to hear it's working.

The "System Volume Information" folders are hidden system folders. To see
them, you *must* have folder options/view tab in the control panel set to
see hidden and system folders.

Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Under Hidden files, enable "show hidden files and folders"
