Okay, i got a new wd80gb hard drive for christmas, i put a fresh installation of win xp pro on it. it worked fine for about a week or two. then i started to get a few "windows file protection" popups asking for the cd. i would put the cd in and it would go away. then if i have to restart my pc for some reason, windows will not boot. it will pass POST and start to load windows then it will go to a black screen. then if u restart from there the startup screen with the safe mode selection will come up. it locks up in all booting modes. in safe mode it stops after mup.sys, which is where it will normaly load the windows gui. so then i would reinstall windows, and i get the same thing after a few restarts. i have tried repairing installations, new installations, and complete formating and installing. i get the same thing every time. i do have another slave wd40gb hard drive hooked up as well, but this does not affect windows system files or the boot process does it?

i hope some one out there can help me

thanks

All upper case and all lower case posts are equally hard to read.

If I have decoded your post correctly, your may have a defective hard drive.
Even new drives can be defective.

Open My Computer. Right click on your primary drive and select Properties
and then the Tools tab. Click on Error check. Check both boxes. You get a
reboot message. Reboot.

If you get a number of errors, suggest your replace your drive.

Try to get in repair console, use the command chkdsk /r /p
to fix the error on the hard drive
but it seems it is hardware problem, try to download the checking tools from your hard drive manufacturer

How come you put "i hope some one out there can help me" on a separate line
with a space prior to it?

To make it stand out and easier to read. Try it with the rest of your HARD
TO READ post! Also. a 4th grader knows about capitalization at the beginning
of a sentence. This is NOT one of your teenage chat rooms.
