I am trying to edit some files that I have downloaded off of the internet.
These files are from a Torrent site...meaning filesharing site. They are all
AVI files. Whenever I open them in Windows Movie Maker or Pinnacle Studio, I
can see and hear the video in the preview windows but when I drag and drop
into the timeline, I get only audio. Can someone please tell me what may be
wrong with the files or with the process I am using? Is there a different
program I could try to edit these files with? Thanks in advance.

You need the correct codec. Almost all AVI files are compressed - or they
would be in the size range of 12gb per hour of video.

In order to view them, you need to have the correct codec with which they
were compressed installed on your hard drive.

Download and install G-Spot codec identifier to find out with which codec
your AVI files were encoded, then download the correct codec.

Ok I have the Gspot program. According to it, I have all the right codec
installed....at least I think I do. What should I be looking for in
particular?

My guess is you need DIVX......go to www.divx.com click on the
'Divx Play Bundle' and then where it says 'free download' ....enter your
email
address and select the play bundle for xp. Good luck with it....you need
that to
play any of the Divx movies in your media player too.

I have DIVX already. All of the video files play within my player. The
problem I am having is that the video files won't play within my editing
program.
