I am planning on testing Windows Vista RC1

Dan

I will be testing Windows Vista RC1 primarily to see if the security
features are all that Microsoft claims them to be publicly. I have
Windows XP Pro. on an 80 gigabyte hard drive and have about 70 gigabytes
free. I need to create a partition that is hidden and completely
separate to prevent corruption to the XP Pro. side and I was wondering
what you suggest. The hard drive has just one large partition. I
already have burned the Windows Vista RC1 to DVD. Do you think Vista
will need more than 50 gigabytes including programs that I plan to
install? Also, what partition program do you suggest and what is the
best way to go about this. Thanks in advance for your help in helping
me get Vista safely installed in a test partition to see if its security
is up to expectations.

One of the third party boot managers. You will not be able to hide Vista
from XP with the bootmanager in Vista. If you don't, you will lose shadow
copies and restore points every time you boot back into XP. I suggest that
you allow 40GB for Vista since this is the figure given by MS on Get Ready.
The installation will take 11GB, about 7 when you are up and running. VSS
wants about 15% of the volume for its work. Allow for the virtual memory
file and the remaining should be enough for testing quite a lot of stuff.
Besides, you can use an external usb drive for additional file space.

Hi Dan,
A 30gig partition would do the job nicely leaving you with around 20gig for
programs after instalation.
I installed on a 45gig partition and after instal of many programs including
Office 2007 Beta 2 still have around 34gig left.
Hope this helps

Thanks and which partition program and boot manager do you suggest that
I buy to allow a hidden partition just for Vista.

I have no opinions about third party boot managers since I never use them.
Sorry.

Thank you and there was a suggestion from another group about Boot It NG.
Any opinion about that and thanks in advance for the response.

I use PartitionMagic 8.0. Buy it from the store, in the box, instead of
downloading it. This includes BootMagic, a very robust boot manager. It
has never led me wrong, except when I screw it up myself. Cost is about
$70.00 USD, but well, well worth it. Just being able to boot directly into
PartitionMagic or BootMagic from the CD instead of from Windows is a huge
advantage.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate them.

You are very welcome. Additionally, even though it carries the
Norton/Symantec brand name, they have not owned it long enough to screw it
up too badly. Good luck, and if you want to know how to do something with
PM, just post it, and I or someone else will be glad to help.
