To whoever can solve this my sincere appreciation...

I have a hard drive "D:" on which I keep a lot of old AutoCAD job files. I
just noticed today for some reason that this folder and all the folders and
files under this main AutoCAD archive folder are in "Read-Only" mode! I
don't know why this is so and I don't remember seeing this before.

So... I tried to un-check the "Read-Only" box with the Windows Explorer
"Properties" window. It even asked me if I wanted to include all the
subfolders and files, to which I said yes. It then proceeded to show a
progress box (with progress bar and all) indicating 16 minutes remaining.
After about 16 seconds it seemed to be done.

The problem is that it really did not change any of the "Read-Only"
attributes! I tried this many times, even with a different file browser with
the same result each time! This is MADDENING!!!!!

Does anyone know what is going on here, besides the typical Microsoft
programming BS???

This kind of stuff just makes me insane because I can see absolutely no
logical reason why it is refusing to obey what it is told to do while at the
same time making me think is doing so!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

This is normal with Windows XP. Do you have a problem accessing the files?

Thank you for your reply. I noticed the problem while I was viewing a JPG
photo in one of my old job folders and noticed it needed to be rotated 90
degrees to be in the correct orientation. I attempted to rotate the photo
(as I regularly do with such photos). That is where Windows told me the file
was "Read Only" and the rest is "history", as they say.

Why would this be "normal" for Windows XP? It is not the case with my
everyday files on my "C:" drive!

Thank you,

DWK

Thank you for your help. I now understand that Windows does not want to
change "Folder" status because I apparently have some "custom" settings in
effect for the folder(s) in question. This does seem an odd and clunky way
to accomplish what they want on the part of Microsoft. I was, however, able
to change the "Read-Only" attribute of the photos I wanted to change by
moving them over to another folder on the "C:" drive, changing them then
moving them back. Seems like a lot of work for nothing.

Take care,

DWK :o)

You have to change the attribute for the file. Windows ignores the attribute
for the folder.

In Windows Explorer select one of the files, press CTRL-A to select all the
files, right click the selected files and pick properties, put a check in
Read-only, then uncheck it and click apply.
