I am giving up!

Ok, I am giving up. I thought the RC1 was going to be stable enough to do
some decent testing, but every program and application and driver I try to
install fails. Can't print, can't scan, can't run any of my programs.

Yes, it is a nice looking OS, but who needs an OS that nothing will run on?
Most application shops have officially stated that they have not updated
their programs for Vista yet. Yes, the release date is supposed to be
January, but I am guessing that it will be at least another year until all
the programs I have and use have been Vista-sized.

So, good bye folks.. I am dumping this and going back to XP for at least
another year!

Take care, Paul.

Oh, can I ask you to do something before you dump your Vista installation?

Please go to Control Panel, open "Problem Reports and Solutions" program and
click "Check for new solutions". Even if it will not help you with your
problems immediately, it will let Microsoft guys (and most probably
app/drivers developers if they are joined appropriate MSDN program) know
about them and may help in solving them faster.

Thank you.

Know the feeling. I want to go to Vista64 from XP X-64 and 80% of my
programs won't run either. At least I have drivers for all my hardware, but
replaced most of that going to x-64.
Good luck.

Probably a wise choice. I'm sure that now Vista is RTM the vendors
of both hardware and software will get busy and update their
drivers/software, etc. very soon. I see that HP and others are now
offering free upgrades to Vista:

http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/....html?jumpid=ex_R602_info/hho-ng-1179-newLink

so it would seem that HP, et. al. will be joining with MSFT in pressuring
software/hardware vendors to get busy!

May help with a few of the large software firms, but most of the software
that the average consumer has accumulated over the past 5-8 years is from
small niche companies who aren't in business anymore, gobbled up by bigger
companies who have their other software and aren't going to do anything with
the older programs except continue to sell to the millions of XP users.
Lots of new companies will jump on the bandwagon and bring out new products,
but is has been disappointing to have to buy 2-4 new programs to get the
functions one little old program did.

Well Paul,

You are using RC1, and RC1 has already been outdated as far as the test
platforms go. A lot of things didn't work correctly in RC1. However, if you
have a torrent setup, you may be able to find RC2, which your RC1 key will
still work on. RC2 is much more stable, and should give you fewer issues.
I'm sorry I can't give you more help, and I understand that it can be
frustrating. I don't know why Microsoft is still offering RC1, when RC2 has
already been released to the public, and they have already gone RTM with
Vista.

Hope this helps :-)

Which I find very funny since HP has, so far, been one of the worst
offenders of not having Beta drivers available for their products.

Well, Gene, it does not help much, but thanks for the reply. I am not going
hunting for RC2, and I fully understand why MS is not making it available. If
it is RTM, then obviously, they are not interested in customer feedback from
RC1 or RC2. Besides, what feedback is there to give? "Product X does not work
on Vista - MS response: contact Product X support and ask them to upgrade
their product."

Anyway, that is not the issue. The issue is that while the OS may be good
and stable, and contain lots of new stuff including security fixes, it is
totally useless to me if I cannot run my existing programs on it. And I doubt
that by release date in January, there will be much difference. Right now, I
cannot run my Norton AV, I cannot print to my new Dell 3010cn printer, I
cannot run Adobe CS2, and on and on.. These are not archaic programs or
devices - imagine if I tried some of my older stuff?!? It seems everything I
try to load onto it fails.

So, it is back to XP for me.. at least for another year. Hopefully, by then
all the 3rd party developers will have their act together.. and hopefully, it
will not cost me an arm and a leg to have to buy new products or upgrades to
get them to run on Vista.

Paul,

When you report a problem using "Problem Reports and Solutions", it's not
just "YOU: Hey, MS, this app is not working! MS: Well, let's see... Nope,
can't help with that" kind of conversation. Windows sends to Microsoft a
bunch of technical details about an error and environment at the time error
occured. This information can really help devs with figuring out exact cause
of an error. It is stored in a database. If there's already a solution in
database for this or similair error you will get this info. If not, the
issue will be piped to automatic and/or manual analysis. Third-party devs
can also get access to [part of] this database to see if there are any
problems reported regarding their software, get error details to work on and
post back solutions.

Microsoft has stated several times that CTP/CPP program was a huge success
in terms of quantity and quality of feedback received [via PRaS and OCA].
- MS response: contact Product X support and ask them to upgrade their
product."

Well ,this is IMHO not the attitude of people MS was targeting with public
beta releases. The whole idea of beta is to try and break it, to install
whatever you can think of and see if it works, to do all kinds of crazy
things with OS and see if it can stand it. And if not, report all issues
back to developer. If you're not that kind of enthusiast, probably you can
save yourself a hassle and wait patiently (passively) until vendors fix all
apps and drivers.

No argument from me about your personal decisions. However, Vista is OEM
only at this point. Retail will not show up until January. I would hope
that by January there will be "Vista updates" from the various software
vendors. I feel that this is a reasonable expectation since we've seen
eventual software (and driver) updates appear after the official release
of XP and just about every other major Windows version.

Agreed, but they (like some other companies) have responded to emails
on several occasions with "NO upgrade drivers until after release" or
"We don't release drivers for Beta products" and other such comments so
we'll see what happens now that excues won't work anymore.

My personal experience is that, as far as printers are concerned, the
older stuff is what works, believe it or not. My very elderly HP
LaserJet 6L has built in drivers in every version of Vista I've tried
while my nice new color laser won't work. Go figure?

such comments so we'll see what happens now that excues won't work

I'm pretty sure I meant "excuses"? I can spell, it's my fingers that
can't spell.

Remember the driver fun with x64. Fortunately the Canon printer they would
never write drivers for there work great on Vista64.

I'm in the same position. My family, that uses this home PC has been very
unhappy; with jumping mouse pointers in Office 2003, no TV drivers, and
other issues. They could care less about the nice visual backgrounds, etc.

We have been very happy with XP Pro and this is the first experience with a
release canadate beta that has shown me no reason to upgrade to the next
version of the operating system.

Richard.
