As I said in the subject, I have just managed to get it activated twice in two completely different computers. I thought one could not do that. My intention was to use my cd to help a friend with her computer. She has bougth a copy of XP Home for herself but I forgott to bring it along when I fetched her computer, so she gave me her product key that is written on her envelope and then I just used my own cd to install and then tried to use her key, witch did not work. So I continued with my own key and thougth that I could change it later on. That has not been possible to do, I tried to use the guide in Ms support where they explain how to change the Identification in registry. Nothing works, do I really have to go to my friends house and pick up her cd (she lives an hour away from me and I am lazy) to be able to help her with this.
I hope you can understand my english, I am from Sweden and not so good at writing in your language.
Please tell me how to fix this

Do a repair install , with the proper key. Jym (your English and grammer
is much better than most people that post in this newsgroup).

Make that the proper cd and key. Jym

If the CDs were identical, then both keys would work with either CD.
But since they don't, you need to perform a Repair Installation with
the correct Product Key and correct CD to use the proper keys:

Not doing so may cause activation issues in the future on the
correctly configured computer.

I have a similar question.....Actually it is a illegal to legal question......

I got a bootleg copy of XP PRO from a friend to try and see if would like it first before I purchased. Kinda like shareware
from microsoft.........yeah right!!!! Anyway after being a died in the wool Win98 & ME fan for years.... I have finally decided that I like the way XP works overall....
(Although I think that it loads way TOO MANY things in memory, and would ike to learn how to limit that...but thats another question)

The bootleg copy....is a legal multi-office corprate copy..so I could just continue to use it.....but I do want to do whats right, after all Bill needs the money......so I have purchased my own copy of XP PRO and want to install it overmy existing bootleg......... I assume that I can also do a re-install with the proper CD and CD code numbers and this will make me legitimately legal ?????

Any ideas? Ok give me the lectures too if you must....but Im fixing my non-legal status.

thanks
jack

The retail disk has a repair option which is located in the install section.
Doing this procedure and using your new disk and key you should retain all
of your files and settings. What you mean by a multi-office corporate copy I
quite don't understand. Jym

Jack;
There is no such thing as "multi-office corprate copy", however there
is Volume License which is what you most likely have.

You need to perform a Repair Installation using the legal CD and
Product Key:

Thank you for helping me out, as I understand I can continue to fix my friends computer with all the settings for e-mail and desktop and so on. And when I bring it back to her I will reinstall XP with her cd and cd-key and it will all work out. Am I getting this right so far?
Best regards

^^^^^^^^^^
This is what it is... I just used the wrong terms to describe it.

Jupiter and Jym............

Thank you both.....
You two really deserve a nice round of applause, pats on the back, ata boys, etc.... I have noticed that you both try and help where ever you can...
thanks again

I wouldn't worry about it now that it's activated. Actually, you can use the
same product key for different computers. (Even though you're not supposed
to) It shouldn't be a problem unless you have to reinstall it a bunch of
times on each of the computers and have to activate it each time then the
key all of a sudden will not let you activate via the internet and you'll
have to call Microsoft and get them to give you a manual activation key.
(Which I know for a fact they will with no problems)
