Hypothetical Question - maybe ;)

Let's just suppose that builds 5728 and 5744 were not actually in the main
stream for the actual release version or Gold or RTM or whatever the retail
release will be. What if they were released to check some very specific
code for some very specific reason and were not part of the post 5600
stream.

Now we would have to believe 5600 was the actual final build prior to retail
release. Would Microsoft update the 5600 installs through Windows Update to
include the lessons learned, or would that be impossible?

Your hypothesis has merit, since consecutive build numbers may be from
different branches. These branches may have started long before Beta 1, and
may or may not be continued even now. There is no evidence (well, outside
Microsoft, of course) that any one of the three builds you mention are
directly related to each other or are parent builds of what will eventually
be called RTM or Gold.

MS now recommends using 5728 or 5744 for certification purposes (like Vista
Logo). 5600 is dead. 5744 is the release candidate now and was not
released for testing any special code or drivers. Your question is moot.

Builds 5600, 5728, and 5744 come from different parts of the WinMain build
tree. Build 5600 ended the "Beta 2" fork, and then any build that is 57xx is
in the RTM fork of the build tree. That doesn't necessarily mean that the
final RTM build will be in the 57xx number as MS has daily builds, etc.

Most interim builds such as 5472, 5536, 5728 don't usually get code updates
pushed down thru WU unless there is some major vulnerability that affects
that build. Because build 5600 is RC1, MS does release different updates to
users of RC1. Because 5728 and 5744 both already contain newer code than
RC1, MS may or may not release updates for some of what is reported by users
of the newer builds.

Hey Colin;

Haven't seen you around much. Have you had any resolution to the issues
with your new system?

Not to be obstinate, but is there some publicly available evidence that the
particular build branch that begat 5600 has been severed, or is one of the
two other builds (5728/5744) a direct descendant of 5600? I am not doubting
what you have posted, but these are the types of things that intrigue me
(the process, not the product... guess it's the engineer in me!).

The resolution awaits a BIOS update by Asus, according to CyberPower. I am
waiting for rev 305 to get out of beta.

5744 is called a Milestone build by MS. It would is not possible to revert
to 5600 and go forward again to achieve the release version since regression
testing would have to start all over again. There is no point anyway.

MS will likely round the build number up for rtm. They rounded up to 2600
for XP. I think it is a good office pool item and I am betting on 6000
because that would be nicely symmetrical with the fact that Vista and
Longhorn Server are NT 6. Another good office pool item is the final name
for Longhorn Server. My money is on Windows Server 2008 since I think it
will rtm in second half of 2007.

Hope ASUS gets the BIOS straightened out for you.

I was strongly leaning to Voodoo for my new notebook, even had it spec'd out
but had not pulled the trigger, and then HP bought them... I guess I'm back
to square one and now must decide between CyberPower and Falcon NW. I just
am not ready to deal with HP/Dell/Gateway et. al. style "tech" support. I
did just buy a new Panasonic W5 from Dynamism for short (less than a week)
trips. Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, 120GB Drive, DVD-+RW, 11 hours battery and it
weighs about 1 Kg. Too small for anything serious, though, but it sure is
easy to pack!

I understand what you mean about 5600. I was not aware that 5744 was
released as a Milestone. Thanks for the information.

Colin;
A little late to the numbers game!! LOL
But; I bet you're on track, been saying that since 5384;6000=6; NT 6
Welcome to the betting table!!! LOL

STEP AWAY FROM THE P.C.- but leave your credit card!!! LOL :-) :-O!

Thanks for the info. Since I just got RC1 and it is a real disappointment
but no use doing much with a 'dead' system. Incidentally, after trying to
upgrade beta2 (86) to RC1, unsuccessfully, the rollback left me with a
system that is virtually useless also. Wife cannot even use it for surfing
only, without constant freezing. Bummer.

Running RC1 Build 5600 also and very disapointed - running Win XP Pro on
second machine and except for a few improvements, i.e., HD/partition
management and new firewall, can not see what the fuss is all about. Built a
new AM2 AMD 4200, with 512 DDR2 and over all performance of Vista is - SLOW!
I.E. is slower in Vista - just takes for ever, while XP with IE & is smoking
most of the time.

Tks guys for all the useful info - I feel better knowing your concerns are
similar.

I use an AMD x2 4400+ and have very snappy perf with Vista. However I have
4GB of ram so the diff may be in the ram.
