Hyperthreading ON vs. OFF

The hyperthreading setting is OFF by default on my new computer. I
understand that if I turn it on, certain programs that have been designed to
take advantage of that technology will run faster...so I'll probably do
that.

But are there any downsides or performance hits to turning it on?

I would definitely turn it on, as I too have heard of no disadvantages to
doing so. Keep in mind that HT is tied into ACPI power management in some
way, so you may need to enable it in the bios if HT doesn't work at the
outset.

To check if it is enabled, right-click on the taskbar and launch Task
Manager, then Performance. If you see two windows under CPU Usage History,
HT is enabled. If enabled you will also see "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" under
Computer, and two P4's will show under Processors.

Thanks to all for the help.
