Hyperlink to Picture

I have a page that has numerous hyperlinks linked to pictures. It works fine
but the picture opens in a new window on the left hand side on a white
background. Is there any way for the picture to be centred on a colored
background.

Place each large image on it's own page and format the page, and then link
the thumbnails to the pages. Your present method only opens the image in
the browser, with all the browser defaults.
 
I thought about doing that but there is about 70 hyperlinks all with
different pictures, would this slow down the site or cause me problems when I
come to publish the site.
