when I try to hyperlink to a page in the hyperlink box the whole page is

Do you mean that you see a completely blank page?
It is possible that that is what you are linking to.
What appears in the address bar?
The page you trying to link to ?
Or something else?
Or do you mean that the new page replaces the old page?
AFAIK, this is normal behaviour when target=_self
But if you set target=_blank, you will get a new page
