When I open a "Create Mail" window the "Insert picture" button on the
toolbar is O.K. but the "Insert hyperlink" button is not operating.
The "Insert \ Hyperlink" in the main toolbar works fine, so what do I need
to do to enliven the insert button in the messgae toolbar?

To use those buttons you must be composing in HTML. In plain text just type

Thanks for the explanation Steve. I now know that you must have some appropriate text highlighted at the point where you want it to appear before the button activates .
(Will write myself a note to this effect!!!)
