We have a server with 2 Intel Xeon cpu's doing hyper
threading - mimicing a total of 4 cpu's.
How well does Win2K Server support hyper threading ?
Does it work at all ?
If yes - does Win2K Server then actually perform as if
there were 4 physical cpu's installed ?
If no - what operationg system would give us max benefit
from hyper threading ?

Regards,

Peter

HyperThreading is supported at the hardware level, so Windows 2000 doesn't
really even know anything about it. In your case, Windows will treat it as
though you had four physical CPU's. The limitation is that even though
Hyperthreading mimics multiple CPU's, there is still just one set of
pipelines etc. Because of this, Hyperthreading is not going to give you the
same performance as two physical processors, but the OS has nothing to do
with that. However, with that being said, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
are designed specifically to take advantage of some specific functionality
provided by Hyperthreading, so these OS's should be a bit faster on a
Hyperthreaded machine than Windows 2000. More info is available here:
