We are looking into upgrading hardware on an existing 2k
server to increase performance by upgrading the
motherboard and cpu to support higher fsb and hyper
threading. The after the upgrade windows 2000 server
still only lists a single processor even though it is
enabled in bios. We tested the hardware configuration on
a fresh install of 2k and 2 processors showed up. How do
we get 2k to recognise the upgrade to hyper-threading?

To get a preexisting install of Windows 2000 to see more than one processor,
you need to update your HAL to the multiproc version. Open Device Manager
and expand the Computer entry at the top. Then double-click the "Advanced
Configuration and Power Interface PC" option. Then click the Driver tab and
click Update Driver. Choose to select the compatible devices, not have it
search automatically. It should come up with a Multiprocessor entry. Choose
that and finish the wizard. After a reboot, it should have the multiproc
HAL.
