I am using xp for the first time...how do I get this
thing into hybernation mode?

Who says you're a dummy?

Open the Start menu and look for the Shut Down icon on the lower right.
(Yes, we have to 'start' to shut down - welcome to Windows.) Click the Shut
Down icon and you should see a small window with three icons, one of which
is Hibernate.

Mind you, this presumes that Hibernation is enabled on your computer. To see
if that's true, open Control Panel and double-click on the Power Options
icon. When the Properties sheet opens, select the Hibernate tab and put a
checkmark in Enable hibernation (unless one is already there.)

1. Open XP's "Help and Support"
2. Type the word HIBERNATE and hit enter.
3. Under "Pick a Task", click on "Automatically put
your computer into hibernation"

Go to start>shut down> and when the three icons appear
press shift and the standby icon should turn into
hibernate but remember to hold shift down while clicking
