Can someone tell me an easy way to see if a server is
running adv server or just server? How do you tell?
Much appreciated.

Just click the "Start" button and the vertical bar should say if its Server
or Advanced Server.

Thanks. That's perfect, except I have one server that
says "Windows Powered" there...is there any other place to
check?

When you logon, the top of the logon window should tell you what OS it is.
I don't have any downlevel clients still installed on any of my boxes, but
guess that it would probably be win98 or similar, and hopefully their logon
window will still tell you what OS it is <g>

If up right click on my computer and look at properties - I think it shows
there.

Click [Start]
Settings
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
System Summary
OS Name

-----------------
or, a faster way:
-----------------

Click [Start]
Run
Type msinfo32
Press [Enter]

No, it does not.
That only shows "Microsoft Windows 2000"

Ok, I've done all suggestions that everyone has suggested.
This one server that I've inherited says "Microsoft
Windows Powered" in ALL places. I still don't know what
flavor it is? Oh well. I'm going to assume it's adv server
for my software inventory...unless anyone else has any
ideas?

Thanks Guys,

Alan

Look in HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Control\ProductOptions\ProductType:
'servernt'=Server, 'lanmannt'=AdvancedServer or Server DC :). Probably,
another key ProductSuite should have an entry 'Enterprise' in case of
Advanced Server (I don't have any AdvServ around and could check it tonight
only at home).
And that 'Powered OS' - where did you get it? Is it Compaq/HP or IBM?

Start -> Run (or Windows+R) then type winver

HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Control\ProductOptions:
ProductType=LanmanNT and ProductSuite=Enterprise: Advanced Server;
ProductType=LanmanNT: any DC;
ProductType=ServerNT: Server stand-alone or member.
