Laptop not new but still needed and used

Somehow a loose screw dropped into the case

To get screw out I have had to completely strip laptop and take the heatsink off to remove board.

Problem....When makers have put CPU into cradle they have also put glue onto top of cpu and then fixed heatsink and screwed it down.

I cannot now fit cpu and heatsink back into cradle because the latch need to be vertical to lock cpu into place..ARRRGGGHHHHHH

Any ideas?

Yes, that's not glue, it's the remains of a thermal pad.

The CPU needs some thermal paste between it and the heatsink to enable efficient heat transfer. Without the paste the CPU will overheat and possibly die.

I do hope that's not glue you've used to stick the CPU to the heatsink in that photo because you're going to have to remove it.

Remove it and then thoroughly clean off the top of the cpu and the heatsink surface where it will meet the CPU. To do this, be gentle, and use meths or isopropyl alcohol, clean cloth, cotton buds and if neccessary a blunt wooden surface such as a lolly stick to scrape residue off.

The key word here is gentle. Mind you don't bend any pins.

Then you'll need some thermal paste, Arctic silver - available from most online UK suppliers - is the best. Or visit a local Maplins or electronics shop and ask for a small tube of thermal paste.

Put the spotlessly clean CPU in it's socket, clamp it home.

Apply a very thin layer of thermal paste to the entire surface of the CPU, using a credit card or similar to spread.

Fold the heatsink onto the CPU and secure.

Reassemble laptop, offer up a prayer to the god/creator/benevolent being of your choice.

Mate ive not used anything!!

It was already there :(

Yeah i do indeed realise a thermal paste needs to be used when reattaching the heatsink

I do have some cleaner which i do use often very good too. Just a bit unsure about getting CPU off. Will keep you in formed!

OK thanks mate. Not sure if I would have attempted getting it off otherwise.

It was a weird thermal bad, Tin foil on top with a compound underneath.

Anyway managed to use a stanley blade to get underneath cpu and lift it up and clean both it and copper heatsink :)

Hope it still all works when i put it back together now. I bet theres a screw left over ;)
