Hum through speakers. More when move mouse. Win2k system. CD Drives?

Got a Win2k system with a SB Live card, latest drivers. Have 2 CD
drives in case.

Got a hum coming out of speaker that gets louder as you increase
speaker volume. I have an ATI Radeon 9000 AGP with latest drivers.

I notice if I Mute the CD IN on the Speaker control panel (in Sys
tray), the hum goes away.
Do not have digital out on any of the 2 LiteOn CD-RW drives.

Any ideas?

I can live with it...

Perhaps the small Compaq case is placing too many wires next to each
other and near the Hard Disk. I shut off the monitor to see if that
was cuasing the hum and it had no effect. Only if I mute CD does the
hum go away.

Thanks so much
Joe

the sound card PCI slot is too close to the AGP? The CD audio cable is
routed over the or near the video card?
The ROM audio cable is not shielded (most cheapies aren't). The
pinouts from the ROMS do not match the pinout of the SBL? mouse (not
wireless) cable is damaged or is routed over the speaker out cable?
The speakers are to close to the case? SBL cards have been a real pain
while in XP, all kinds of weird stuff (tech term) have been cropping
up.

<the sound card PCI slot is too close to the AGP?>

Hmmmmm, move the PCI slot? that came out wrong....the PCI slot used
for the sound card is next to the AGP, move it to another if you can.

Thanks, will try a few things.

If you play an AUDIO CD, can you hear it if you don't mute CD In. ?

If not, the reason for the hum is that the analog audio cable to the
CD from the sound-card is misconnected or miswired.

A few words of advise:
First, install latest web-update from creative site (it's from 2002 or so,
old but works yet)

Start windows volum control, select options, tick everything on under
playback.
Now MUTE everything except, MIDI SYNTH, WAVE/MP3, PLAYCONTROL(main).
Now you can go back in option to de-select those items you not need.

This should make the hum stop. Try inserting an audio-cd, and play it in
wmp8-9, it should play! You do not need that stupid extra cable any more
these days, as audio is played digitally through IDE interface!
If for you can't hear cd-audio in wmp9, unmute CD-AUDIO.

Normally, this humm is caused by AUX, TELEPHONE and MIC unmuted.
