Hum in 2000

I have a dual boot system: Windows 2000 Professional and Windows ME. I
mostly use ME -- it is quite stable and seldom crashes. W2K is giving me
problems -- on the one hand, it slowed Internet Explorer to a crawl and when
I play music, there's an annoying background hum which does not exist in the
ME configuration.

The hum is always present, but gets worse when I move the mouse or do any
other chore within W2K.

I had not used W2K to listen to music that much previously and just started
using it when I installed ITunes, which Apple says needs W2K. I also have
MusicMatch Jukebox installed. The hum is present in both music programs and,
as I mentioned above, ME plays totally silent.

What could be causing this hum in W2K?

Do you have the correct drivers installed for your soundcard for W2K?

YOu have resource contention between your soundcard and something else --
probably your mouse.

It's most likely due to a sound card that isn't truly
Win2K-compatible, or you may not have the correct sound drivers
installed.
