Hello

what happened was my main harddrive my 250 gig sata that I hav
windows xp installed on is not being detected now. I'm trying t
fiddle around with my windows cd and repair console, fixboot.fixmbr
chkdsk etc etc. to no effect. I've also loaded my sata drivers from
floppy prior to this. I used to have this ntldr is missing press ctr
+ alt + del error a lot and somehow I fixed it. I was using my pc an
someone is the house was messing with the breakers and it shut down m
pc in the middle of usage. I noticed ever since i installed that sat
drive that if i crash and don't shut down properly that my pc act
like the sata drive was never there. anyway the windows recover
console doesn't even detect my sata drive at all after loading m
drivers from the floppy. I can't afford to just format this driv
because I got it almost full of data that I need. What can I do t
get it going again? thank

NOW you know why they always tell you to regularly BACK UP YOUR DATA. You
are in a position currently where you basically have no choice but to
reformat and start fresh.

If you haven't installed it yet, get SP2. You should not have to load
SATA drivers with WinXP unless using RAID. A SATA drive as an ordinary
drive does not need extra drivers.
Check Device manager and be sure drive hasn't changed to Virtual. If so
reset it to Basic and reboot - it should come back.
Can we assume the drive shows in BIOS, and that it's set as the primary
boot drive?

Thats just plain wrong with some motherboards.

Not necessarily true.

Some SATA controllers (e.g., Promise 378) require the RAID drivers even for a
single drive, because a single physical drive is mounted as a "striped array
with 1 drive."

Keyword SP2......

Keyword SP2......

SP2 does not obviate he need for drivers if the controller demands them.

If the OP already had the drive working once, he had the minimum requirements.

That depends on the mainboard's BIOS I think. My mainboard
supports SATA II, and my WinXP Pro installation without any service
packs detected my SATA HDD without any need for drivers. Some
mainboards require drivers for SATA drives at installation.

cause he loaded the drivers....so far I have yet to have to use any third
party drivers for raid or sata since SP2

ntldr cannot be fixed with one exception restore from backup or
mirrored partition copy of your back up partition (depending upon what
you did to backup)
Next time you get everything installed & programs installed & windows
updates all ran, then create a second partition or get another drive
(only need about 8 to 15 GB) and get a partition copying program from
your hard disk manufacture's web site) This will create a mirror that
can be restored if anything happens to your existing partition. This
is also a great way to back up your data and this does not require a
backup program or tools.
Good luck!
