Huge problem, Vista VS XP Functionality

rIn XP I was able to dock several folders to the side of the desktop (The
Bottom) and then set the toolbar to autohide/alwaysontop. Now In Vista this
functionality has changed and is very very poor compared to xp. The reason
being in Vista, it appears Toolbars can only be docked verticaly on top of
each other and can no longer be docked onto the same row. Because I use these
Toolbars exclusevly/ for launching files and applications, instead of using
the awful startmenu, it looks like i'm going to have to uninstall vista and
revert back to Windows XP? Anyone know if this is a bug or if there is a
setting to turn back on the full functionality of docked toolbars that's
availible in XP.

TIA

Hi Max, Thanks, but I already know you can drag any folder to the side of the
screen as you can in XP, however it appears that in Vista you cannot now
arrange those multiple docked folders(toolbars) once thay are docked to the
side. in XP you used to be able to dock multiple folders and have them
displayed side by side and slide them around to the size you wanted. in Vista
you can only have one folder per row (if docked to the top/ bottom of the
screen) Note the functionality works the same as XP if they are docked to the
taskbar, its only when they are docked to one of the other sides of the
screen.

I.E. In XP If I docked 2 toolbars to the top of the screen I could arrange
them side by side like below

[ToolBar1|Toolbar2]

In Vista this is no longer possible and I have to stack them Like so

[Toolbar1]
[Toolbar2]

A picture would speak a thousand words, but the forum police would moan if i
did ;-)

I'll have a look at RocketDock else i'll just have to uninstall Vista and
reinstall XP

Hmmmmm.. I just tried it, and it worked for me.
I dragged a folder to the screens left side to make it a toolbar, then I
right clicked it to add another new toolbar, browsed to the folder I wanted,
then repeated to add a third. All were 'dragable' and/or adjustable both
vertically (single row) and horizontally (multiple row). When stacked within
each other, I could also adjust their size by dragging/sliding, as normal,
by grabbing their 'handle'.
Perhaps you are not clicking *within* the first toolbar to create the new
second toolbar?

You can dock any *folder* to any edge you like---just drag it there from
Explorer, then right click and add new toolbars (browse for folders) if
you
like.
Or use this:

to customize and do lots of cool things (free).

Max, Your a star! That works. If I try and drag multiple folders or toolbars
to dock them on the same row then it does not work, so I did as you sugested
and used the context menu/New Toolbar from within an already docked Toolbar
and hey presto multiple docked toolbars on the same row.

I've since read some blogs that suggest MS removed the dragging
functionality to make windows easier to use. Looks like Good old MS cocked
up again! Next they'll be removing drag and drop from file explorer LOL.

Thanks again Max.

Whew! Glad it worked for you. You're welcome.
Yes, the buzz is that Microsoft removed some 'features' of toolbars (note
that you cannot, for instance, drag one out of the Taskbar to put somewhere
else), because some people inadvertently dragged something around and did
not know how to get it back. But at least you can do what you wanted once
you know the 'secret'. LOL!
