Huge delay accessing files on server

I have a Windows 2000 Server as the DC, this DC is also a
File Server. The shared folder is in a dynamic disc using
RAID-5. My problem is that users are complaining about
slow response time when opening, deleting, or saving files
on this share. They usually works with power point
presetations and word files. I though it could be due to
the Raid-5, but client computers use windows 98 and Xp,
and the slow responde only occurs in Xp computers. I tried
to resolve the problem by installing service pack 1 and
all others upgrades for Xp, at first it worked, but only
few days later it gone slow again. Any ideas on how to
resolve this?
Thank you in advance for any help.

1. Make sure all servers and workstation NICs are set to a specific
speed/duplex setting - don't use autosense. If you have a managed switch,
lock down the switch ports, too.

2. This can occur due to DNS misconfiguration. All servers and workstations
should specify the internal AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in their
network settings. The AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with
forwarders to several public DNS servers for external resolution.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202 for more
info.

Have a look at articles 329170, 810907, 812937, 811492, 321169 and 296264.
Also putting the XP-nics to anything but autosense will help.

We recently removed a server that had been used as a file share. Our XP
machines became dog slow when accessing the network afterwards.

To fix the problem we ran regedit on those xp machines searching for and
deleting any entries that referenced the removed server.

One other piece of background that may have affected our setup. The file
server that was removed was once the NT domain controller before we upgraded
to a Win2k, then a Win2003 domain.
