hub problems

I purchased a 4port usb pocket hub and a 128mb usb flash hard drive and neither one work on my machine.I have an Emachine T1400 2 yrs old with 512 ram.Is there any thing else you need special to run these things. the companies support says that they should run fine and they must be defective. What are the odds I bought 2 defective pieces at the same time?
I'm wondering since I don't have a full install of xp and just a restore cd that maybe I'm missing a driver or something I need.
I understand that when you purchase a computer with software already on it you don't get a full install.
Has anyone had this problem, with the computer not recognizing hardware?

is it a powered hub? If not return it an buy a powered one!
