Not sure if this problem has been addressed or not - please forgive me if
it has.

Whenever I try to load a page, IE tells me "cannot find server". In the
address bar all I see is "http:///" (notice THREE slashes) instead of the
page I click on (ie http://www.usatoday.com).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function

Frank - thanks for all your suggestions!
 
Is this the only spot in XP that deals with this? My sister is having
this problem, and with the third slash she is also getting a ?%20 in
the url after the 3rd slash
ad aware is causing a system shutdown message to be sent.
I had her run the registry patch, but that didnt fix the problem.
