I went looking for Mcaffee online scan, using Google and it came up
with this. Naively I ran it partially before getting suspiscious.

Does anyone know anything about it? Have compromised my security?

I don't think so, but the idea of having to use IE ... and at low
security with a special activex control ... at a questionable web
site ... should have made you absolutely shudder and run away
as fast as you could :) There's no reason to use online scans.
Avoid them and avoid the use of IE.

Thanks Art. When I looked more closely it does seem that the link to
Mcafee is genuine, though the first URL remains in the address fiels.

I only use IE on sites that don't work on Firefox, and ActiveX is
disabled by default.
