Despite having firewall, anti-virus and MS Spyware
Doctor, every time I reboot a damn alien "search" engine
called bestsearch (see subject) pops up, selling odious
products, hijacking any homepage settings that I have
made. It also infects other users on my XP system.

How the h**l do I get rid of it !!!

Don't go to the site that guy listed to check out, 'cause
I went there a few minutes ago and immediately got a
trojan which McAfee caught.

I went to the same site but Norton caught whatever it was
and blocked it. I thought it was a false alarm triggered
by something in the HijackThis logs. Did you really get a
trojan? Which one? The site really didn't help much as
the guy finally solved his problem with a reformat.

Anyway, get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select
Open the Misc Tools Section. Click the two boxes next to
Generate StartupList Log and then press Generate
StartupList LOG. This will bring up a notepad file. Save
it somewhere you can find it again and send me the
HijackThis log as an attachment.
You can try just copying it and pasting it into a reply
but I
might not see it. I should be able to identify the
problem and tell you how to get rid of it for good.

Also go to http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%
20Runners.vbs which should download the vbs program Silent
Runners.vbs. Put it on your desktop. You may need to
turn off Norton script blocking if you have that and
AntiSpy may also object but the program is safe and will
scan your system for hidden registry startup entries and
create a txt file that gives its results. Please send it
to me.

Here is help for you and your BestSearch issue, with no
surprises like the trojan I got when I followed the link
from Wild61 : http://castlecops.com/modules.php?
name=Forums&file=search&mode=results It appears that
alot of people are having BestSearch problems.

FWIW, I went to the page myself and didn't get any Trojan alert from Trend
Micro PC-Cillin 7.500.1001/2.377.00.

I suspect that what you and Pat Cook saw was a false positive--a simplistic
alarm based on the URL of the bad site included in the text on these pages.

I don't think that either the poster or the site have malicious intent, nor
do I think there's an infection at this site.

Went to the site and no trojan found here. I am running Avast! and AVG
Anti-Virus. Did full scans with both and also MS-AS,Spybot,Ad-Aware SE,Spy
Sweeper,BHO Demon,CWShredder and HiJackThis.
I am sure there is no virus or malware from this site. Must be false
positives.
