Html indexer/thumbnailer that puts NEXT and PREVIOUS in index?

This is a strange request, perhaps. I have two excellent indexing
programs, one that was recommended to me here by CoMa (thank you CoMa,
I still use it whenever I need a thumbnailing html index!!).

But what I'm finding is that in a yahoo group, we're writing our own
tutorials. The easiest method is to use screenshots. The tut author
recommended installing Irfanview so one could just spacebar to the
next picture in the series. But I'd like to take it one step further
for those that just don't want to install _another_ piece of software.
I indexed the pictures and that is working just fine. But it would be
nice for users to have the ability to just hit a NEXT or PREVIOUS
button to move between pictures.

I don't want to have to hardcode those in! already there have been 3
updates to the tut as user feedback comes back and the tut author
makes changes. So if there was a way to have that as one of the
features that would be great.

Currently, one has to click BACK to get back to the main index sheet
but the problem with that is there are 89 pictures. Somewhere along
the line, one forgets what number one is at and we lose track. This
isn't a problem if you can just click NEXT or BACK.

Thanks!

jalbum does what i think you're asking for and gives you a slide show as
well, for that matter:

Yes, it's a fabulous contact sheet maker or indexer, but it doesn't
put the NEXT or PREVIOUS options, so I'm right back where I started
with the intial problem mentioned above. And a slideshow isn't what
is needed; might as well just use Irfanview and click the spacebar.

I'm hoping to avoid all that. JAlbum is really fantastic and it does
do what is needed, but it blew up the 1.1 meg folder to just under 4
megs! That really defeats the purpose of this whole exercise as we
might as well just have people dl Irfanview to do the same thing. But
then I'm right back to square one, _again_!

If you know how to get Irfanview's html indexing feature to include a
"next image", "previous image" option, pls let me know. That's _all_
that's missing from any indexing program I've tried and no matter what
I tried with IV, nothing like this comes up.

And, again, I'm not hardcoding that in.

Because things are missed the first read around, YES, JAlbum does do
the job BUT it creates a humoungous system no matter what combination
of options I try. This is NOT good as many of our members are on
dialup. Why would they bother dl this?

Thanks once again for any help.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!

Check out http://jansfreeware.com and in the sidebar go down to Internet
Explorer/ Slideshows for description on using Internet Explorer itself to
present a slideshow and to have the next and back feature (uses a
slidefunction.js) and for the order of the images uses slidelist.js
I have used the above and it was fairly simple to edit the scripts to suit
the sides. She has a BACKEDIT utility that will update the image list which
might be appropriate for 89 images.

Otherwise under her software index on the sidebar check out on the Utility
page SLIDES (its a zip file)

Slides is for creating slide shows from images, sounds and HTML documents.
Features: HTML 3.2 frames enabled viewer; integrated syntax highlighted HTML
editor; slideshow creator/sorter; normal/fullscreen view; manual/autoplay;
background sounds/music and voice overs; supports bmp, (animated) gif and
jpg images; easy image rollovers.

Express Thumbnail Creator had a free version that would do this. I don't
see the free version on their site anymore though.

Well, I dl this one. It seemed very promising, but I couldn't make
heads or tails of it; so it might seem easy to edit to many but I
found that not for me.

Still, I've kept it. Maybe sometime in the hopefully not-too-distant
future, when I look at it again, will have a better idea on how to
adapt the existing components provided.

Like all the other thumbnailer/indexers/slideshow apps, this really
increased the size of the initial folder being dealt with, which was
extremely undesirable. In the end I didn't keep it as I have quite a
few of these apps already and this one didn't do anything that or
something like Irfanview can do. But I really appreciate the help.
It's always good to try out new things!

This thing was really looking grim. But I looked for and dl another
half dozen apps before I found something.

It's funny, but the solution was soooo simple as sometimes one
complicates things unnecessarily. I wanted to provide NEXT and
PREVIOUS functionality to a tutorial of which I only had explanatory
screenshots. The tut author advised everyone to dl Irfanview so that
reading the folder contents of the tut was easy - images accessible in
IV by pressing spacebar.

Not everyone is going to be able or want to dl Irfanview, so I was
looking for an alternative for those people.

In the end WebI2HTML v1.5 provided a one-stop and easy way to do this.
It seemed at first that this was shareware, but the documentation
within the program says not and that it's freeware.

This has no NEXT or PREVIOUS, it's just a one page "indexer" where all
the images show up at once and one just scrolls down. It adds a total
11k to the original folder in one html file! I can live with this
simple format when that is the case. No thumbnails, no nothing but by
some simple yet quick hardcoding, I was able to customize the look of
the page created. So one just scrolls down the images as one is
following the tut! Simple, yet it gets the job done!

As I said, it would have been nice to have the output where one image
shows up per page and that the NEXT and BACK give us access to the
rest, but this is definitely an excellent, if simple, solution. Sure,
I could code something up this simple, but it would take a few
minutes. This way, the program takes care of the grunt work and I
come in just to fine-tune!
