When I'm one a website such as google and click on one of
the links listed there, instead of going to that website,
I get a message "HTML 404 not found." What does this
mean, and how can I fix it?

Also, if after looking at one website I then want to go
to another, and put in the correct url, it often won't
go, but instead just stays where it is. I have to shut
down IE and then start again.

Any help to this poor amateur will be appreciated.

The 404 error means that the internet has not been able to find an 'Address'
for the web site that you have typed into the Address bar or clicked on the
hyperlink on the Google results page (by address I mean the IP Address eg
1234.1332.2133 etc... you may have seen something like this before if you
have ever PING'ed a site). It indicates that the web site is not or no
longer registered... Google uses caching ( makes a copy of parts of web
sites) to display in search results, so it could be that the site has since
closed down.

It could also mean that you have some unwanted spyware on your computer that
is preventing you from viewing certain sites.

Follow the instructions for installation of Ad-aware and SpyBot at this =

If you have ad-blocking software check the settings and the names of the
sites that you cannot visit. Do they contain keywords like 'banner', 'ad'
etc.
