I'm having trouble with my external USB 2.0 drive. Most
of the time it comes up as an "unrecognized usb device"

The only thing I can see is that the unrecognized device
in the device manager is using this driver
file "hpusbfd.sys", which doesn't seem to make any sense
because it is not an HP drive.

The USB drive is a Plumax enclosure with a Maxtor IDE
drive in it.

Does anyone know what this hpusbfd.sys file does? Is it
part of Windows XP install or did I get this from HP
somehow? Should I try to find an update for it? Delete
it? Or, what will fix the drive so that it stops
disappearing?

Thanks,
Pete

Hi Rich,

Thanks - I had read that already before my post. Are you
the "Rich" mentioned at the end of the note?

Anyway, my problem doesn't involve an HP device or BSOD.

Actually, I tried renaming the hpusbfd.sys file to
hpusbfd.old and restarting, but then none of the devices
attached to the USB 2.0 card were recognized at all.

I'm starting to think that somehow there is a conflict
between the USB 2.0 hard drive and my HP 6200C scanner.
Although, the scanner seems to work fine, and the scanner
does NOT use the hpusbfd.sys file anywhere in its driver
listing.

I can't tell if this file, hpusbfd.sys, is from the
regular Microsoft XP install or how I got it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Pete

I am having problems with my Iomega ext usb drive. In trying to resolve issues I noticed the hpusbfd.sys file. I had long ago removed the hp 5200Cse scanner. This driver seemed to causing problems. In my research to correct problems I came accross the following proposal to fix...

The problem is related to the HP driver Update: don't install them if you have an 6300 series scanner !

It seems they will install the driver: hpusbfd.sys

and it will load this driver instead of standard usb drivers provided with windows. This driver seems to be the cause of the problems with vmware workstation.

It seems that I have succesfully removed such driver by using the above procedure (as found on hp website about a different product):

---------
Make sure the printer (*scanner) has been disconnected from the computer.
Click Start and then Run. The Run window opens.
In the Open: box type regedit.
Click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to System.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to Control.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to Class.
Click the plus ( +) sign next to {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}.
Note the number of keys that appear below the {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} key in the last step.
Click {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} so that it is highlighted.
Right-click the UpperFilters line in the right hand window, then click Delete.
Click Yes when prompted if you are sure that you want to delete the Upper Filters line.
Click File and then Exit to close the windows registry.
Click Start and then Search. The Search window opens.
Click All Files and Folders.
In the All or Part of the File Name box type HPUSBFD.sys.
In the Look In: drop-down box select Local Hard Drives.
Click Search.
Right-click on each file that Windows Search finds then click Rename.
NOTE: If Windows does not find any files proceed to step 9.

Rename the files to HPUSBFD.old or HPUSBFDOLD.sys.
Close the Search dialog box.
Restart the computer.

It seems ok now.

*Warining* do not delete or rename hpusbfd.sys without making changes to the registry: by doing this I got a broken OS with yellow explamation marks on USB controller. I was unable to fix this situation and I should restore the whole drive from a ghost image. 1. clean registry 2. delete or rename the file.

I will do more research before trying to do this but am interested if anyone has encountered this situation.

Message for cmatt - Brilliant!!! Your resolution solved the problem - HPUSBFD.sys (HP 630 scanjet driver) interferring with the loading of LG mobiles - U8110 to U8330 (all have the same drivers) . It is disconcerting that LG would be aware of the problem - just going off the number of Posts in various online Forums and how long these drivers have been suppiled with LG Mobiles, however they did not have any resolution, nor useful methodology for determining the cause of the conflict.

But you did it ... good on you!
Even I could follow the instructions. I have written to Three UK and Australia referring them to your solution @ https://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-463685.php
