hi
i have a laserjet4 which has started giving paper jams on every print made,
the problem appears to be with the exit rollers not providing enough
traction to the paper. Before i scrap the unit i would like to try and clean
the rollers but i'am having trouble actually getting to them can anybody
point me in the right direction?
I have removed the side panel and partially removed the top but can't find
anything which would release it completly.

If cleaning these does not work does anybody know where these exit rollers
can be purchased from in the UK.

Thank in advance
Barrie

Remove right side panel.

Open lid; remove single screw near the brush stowage near right hand
side.

Open rear door. Undo two screws, one either side, holding rear of top.

Get small flat bladed screwdriver and insert in slots at top front
(under where the lid was) one at a time. Press gently to front to
release latch. Pull top cover up slightly to hold latch open. Repeat for
second slot/latch.

Carefully lift cover and rotate to right (keeping right edge where it
was and moving left edge to the sky). Carefully detach cable that plugs
into back of control panel.

To remove exit assembly, press in two plastic latches at rear (bottom of
assembly), pivot whole assembly upwards (the depressed latches slide
behind the metal bar) and forwards and then slide forwards and unhook.
BEFORE doing this, release earth clip on left side of printer. Note
where the assembly fits into at its front BEFORE you remove it; it's
tricky enough to get back even if you know where it goes! Be careful not
to damage the gears on the right hand side during removel/refitting.

The shield over the top rollers has two plastic clips. Release these and
pivot the shield before pulling off the shaft.
If cleaning these does not work does anybody know where these exit rollers
can be purchased from in the UK.

My experience is that cleaning only sometimes works; hardening of the
rubber seems to be the problem.

Both rollers (the pair) are about 8 quid plus standard shipping of about
7 quid.
It's usually the top one that's the major problem. Each is held with a
circlip, then slides along and lifts out the other end, taking its
bearing bush with it.

Thanks for the instructions Bob worked a treat for getting at the rollers
but unfortunately as you stated cleaning is less than effective. Time to
order some replacements i think.
Thank again Bob

One further note on this. Check the gears on the output rollers for
missing or broken teeth and also check the gears inside the printer
that mesh with the output gears for same.
