I have been unable to get my old printer up and going, worked for three hours
online with a HP tech, and tried about everything. Every time we made a
change, and asked for a test page, the message came up that a test page was
sent to the printer, but nothing printed.

Are you connected by parallel cable or USB? If USB direct into the PC's
USB port or via a hub?

1 - Are you using the alternate driver that HP refers to:

us&dlc=en&product=75045&os=2093&lang=en

Deskjet 3820 [use] Deskjet 970cse

2 - Are there any documents listed in the Print Queue?

3 - Have you gone through the troubleshooting procedure in this
document:

us&dlc=en&product=75045&os=2093&lang=en

HP All-in-One, Deskjet, and Photosmart Printers - Print Jobs are Stuck
In the Print Queue in Windows Vista and Do Not Print with USB Printers

4 - Have you downloaded and run the Printer Diagnostic Utility at:

=en&product=75045&lang=en

5 - If all else fails try installing the XP Full Featured software:

en&product=75045&lang=en

Just came across this:

HP Deskjet Printers - HPZSTATX.EXE Causes Print Job to Hang in Queue

ISSUE:

When a print job is sent to the printer, the job stays in the printer
queue. The printer will fail to react and no error messages will
appear. Besides, the system may lock up. This issue mainly affects the
following HP Deskjet printers:

HP Deskjet 3820 printer

NOTE that as I read it you do not have to have another printer
installed for this to happen with the printers in the table, only with
the ones listed under the table so the remedy to try would seem to be
to rename that file.

So try the instructions under XP if you then find that file.

BTW WHat version of VISTA are you using and what is the PC make and
model?
